Human civilization is based on the raw materials we extract from the Earth. From the natural gas that keeps you warm in the winter to the rare earth metals in your electric car battery. But how do we know what liest tens of miles below the surface?
The state of the art is to use reflected sound waves from a seismic survey to reconstruct the properties of the subsurface. That way companies and governments will have a much higher confidence before spending millions of dollars drilling into the ground.
The compute resources required to do this reconstruction is immense. For that reason, for a time, the large petroleum companies in the world laid claims to the largest privately held supercomputers in the world.
Today, they use Vorticity technology. Our systems are up to 100x faster, process much larger models and enable us to use higher order physics to gain a much clearer picture of the subsurface. All this at a much lower cost.
